Senator Coleman-

Good job on Galloway. You really had him squirming there in your crushing grip of reason, eh? The only thing missing was your clown suit.

Senator Cantwell Supports Biodiesel

Date: Tues, 17 May 2005
From: Jason Aaron Osgood
Subject: Transportation
To: Senator Cantwell

Senator Cantwell-

Thank you supporting increased automobile fuel efficiency and biodiesel. They're both good and necessary first steps.

I would enthusiastically support efforts to produce biodiesel more efficiently. Perhaps GM or transgenic crops just for fuel. Or sun-soaked vats filled with organisms producing precursors. We certainly have the real estate and biotech community. All we need are the incentives.

Hi Katharine Mieszkowski-

Thank you for continuing to write about environmental issues.

I would be very keen to hear James Howard Kunstler's take on Cuba's
recent urban and organic agricultural "revolution". I couldn't find a
link for the original program I watched, but here's a related link:

Soldiers of Christ: Inside America's most powerful megachurch

We've been picking up Harpers at the newstand of late. Excellent magazine. The only reason I haven't subscribed is because I'm already buried in reading. Anyways.

While reading Jeff Sharlet's "Inside America's most powerful megachurch" (not available online, sorry), I'm again troubled by a two simple questions. These Dominists believe in demons and witchcraft, right? So, why, exactly, is anyone giving any credence whatsoever to their views on evolution and other reality-based notions?

I'm a huge fan of the Bozo Bit. Most socialized, considerate, diplomatic minded people think "flipping the bit" is counterproductive. I disagree.

I call it a "quick rejection algorithm". People in sales know this truth in their bones. Life is short. Resources are finite. There are 6.2b people walking around (you don't have to be friends with all of them). To sift through the options, one comes up with quickie tests. Like the issue of evolution and other so-called "culture war" or "wedge" issues (e.g. young earth, flat earth, witchcraft, supply-side economics, link between 9/11-Iraq, homosexuality is a choice, anthropogenic global warming, etc).

Should a person fail these simple tests, you just smile and move on. Pretty much voting with your money and attention.

My other question is whether or not the benefits of modern society and culture can ethically be extended to people who reject science and reason. The Amish have the right idea. At least they made the principled decision to live by their beliefs. One can respect their choices.

The Dominists and other wackos deserve no such consideration.

So, in effect, Dominists are parasites on modern society. Only too happy to enjoy the fruits of technology, progress, and my tax dollars. But will end up killing the host, unwittingly or not, if permitted. Just like the radical Muslims in the Netherlands who are trying to destroy Dutch society. By helping the Dominists, I'm killing myself. Any benefit they receive is at the expense of everyone near and dear to me as well as everything that I value.

Are we all "okay" with that? There are limits to live and let live. It's called Tough Love.

Michael Medved-

So it's cool to be conservative, right? (Haha, pun, get it?) So, by extension, does that mean it's also cool to be a blithering idiot? [1] Just curious.

PS- My parrot appreciates the all material you provide to line his cage. Natch.

Legislature no friend to business

Editors-

Recognizing that we're all entitled to our set of facts these days, I'm
still bemused by Julia Youngs' apparent willful myopia. She criticizes
our hamstrung Legislature's halfway measures to improve our economy and
preserve our quality of life. Yet offers none of the obvious
constructive ideas left wanting for champions: replace B&O tax,
progressive combo of income and sales tax, and investing in our
infrastructure and education.

Yet again, I'm disappointed these shills for warmed over, discredited
Reagonomics nonsense are given a forum. Any tax is too much. Any
regulation interferes with the mythical "free market". All corporate
welfare is good. Just witness how well these policies have worked at
the federal level: record debts, record trade deficits, culture of
cheating, rapidly increasing inequity, decreasing economic security,
etc. Why, exactly, would anyone want all that for Washington State?
